Kazaa (another popular P2P sharing app) bundles third party software with their own.
You may have heard recently that they are packaging software from Brilliant Digital Entertainment along with Kazaa.
This software will not only share more content with other users, it may also use your unused processing power to help with other companies' complicated computing tasks.
Well sure, that's all well and good. And the user has the option of not "turning on" this software when it "wakes up."
Unless an unforseeable and catastrophic event happens in the somewhat near future that threatens our ability to keep OmahShare completely free,
then we will not package third party apps with OmahShare. Every once in a while we may display an ad on the website, but so far there are no ads within OmahShare itself.
And we don't plan to include any in the near future.
Personally, I think "distributed" computing apps are great. I take part in the SETI@Home project. I think
it is a great use of (for the most part) unused processing power. The SETI@Home client does not slow my system down nor tie up my resources. It runs quietly in the background
while I do my everyday work. If you do decide to join SETI@Home, feel free to join my group (even if you're not from Omaha).
Well anyways, thanks for reading my rant.
